No Matter How You Slice It:
Diamond Cuts

Size isn't everything: Shape has a lot to do with it, too - diamonds in your engagement ring, that is.

While a round cut is the traditional shape of choice, you have a multitude of diamond cuts to choose from, depending on the amount of bling you're looking for, whether you want a contemporary or antique setting, or if you're simply drawn to one shape or another.

The primary decision when it comes to diamond cuts is personal preference. Do you like the way it looks? Is the cut one that you feel comfortable you can enjoy looking at for the rest of your life?

Cost may also be a factor, and you can choose a cut that offers more sparkle from a smaller size rock, for example, if you can't afford or don't want to pay for a larger diamond. No matter the diamond cut you choose, follow the usual guidelines regarding the grade and cut quality of the diamond.

Cushion Cut Engagement Ring

The cushion cut is an antique cut that falls between an Old Mine Cut (popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries) and a modern oval. It's not as flashy as many of the modern cuts, but it has a wonderful, romantic, antique feel and is perfect for an old-style setting, or if you simply prefer a beautiful oval cut.

Because this cut doesn't follow the rules of modern cuts (such as the reflection it creates), choosing this cut is based largely on personal preference. If possible, still choose a diamond that has a rating attached, such as "good" or "very good."

Emerald Cut Engagement Ring

The emerald cut is a classic square or rectangle shape with cut corners. The edges resemble steps, and the top is flat, much like a shiny table top. Because the cut is simple, it does not create a lot of reflection, but the glassy top is a beautiful, elegant look that many women prefer.

Because this cut is simple, a high quality diamond is essential - you can literally look right into the rock - so a clear, brilliant diamond is vital.

Marquise Diamond Cut Engagement Ring

In contrast to the emerald cut, the marquise cut is known as a "fancy" cut for its intricate design and brilliant reflective properties. The diamond is cut to be about twice as long as it is wide with tapered ends. Because of the shine created, its possible to buy a smaller rock and still achieve a brilliant effect.

Marquise diamonds are often set in a solitaire setting to highlight the magnificence of the stone. This cut is also good for making fingers appear longer.

Princess Cut Engagement Ring

The princess cut was developed as an economical alternative to other square cuts and is designed to create maximum brilliance. This cut will have an impact on the setting, so if setting is a high priority, look into your options first. Also take care to speak with a jeweler to pick the best rock for your budget. Because of the square shape, this cut is best for long fingers.
